Donor selection process

The selection process consists of:

  • The assessment of semen parameters in the andrology laboratory:
a full seminogram (assessment of sperm concentration, percent motility and morphology), a freezing/thawing test and other special analyses to exclude chromosomal abnormalities in sperm (FISH and DNA fragmentation tests).
  • Blood tests in order to discard:
Syphilis, Hepatitis B and C, Cytomegalovirus, HIV 1 and 2.
    Karyotype .
  • Evaluation by the andrologist:
Assessment of medical and family history, ruling out inherited diseases Physical examination.

These tests usually require 2 appointments at our center.

Occasionally, men with a normal semen sample cannot be accepted as a donor as they do not fulfil all the requirements. Furthermore, an abnormal semen sample can be indicative of a more general health problem. If this were case, a medical report will be provided.
